The Trentham winds returned in full force today. We woke to cloudy skies and a cooler morning (no sympathy expected from loved ones in the UK dealing with snow). A brisk wind down the range led to rapidly fishtailing conditions from the start of the 600yd match at 8.30 am. The 900 and 1000 yd ranges to follow were very challenging!

""

Scores in the 30’s (ex 50) were common at 900, with the G.B. team managing an average of 43 at 900 and only 40/50 at 1000yds. Despite this several moved up the overall standings with Parag top scoring with 143.8 to move to 6th overall. There were some notable good (& amusing) scores elsewhere. At 600 yds there were only twelve 50’s (298 entries) including Parag’s. At 900 yds a solitary 50.4 by John Snowden of New Zealand (he also managed 47.3 at 1000 yds to win the daily aggregate) with David L and Matt B top scoring amongst the GB Team with 49.4 – 5th and 6th respectively at this range. At 1000 yds, there were no ‘possibles’ (50 ex 50) the range was won by Jim Bailey of Australia and Parag again topped the GB entry with 47.1, from Matt C with 46.4. Special mention goes to Simon with 25.0 with all shots in the scoring area. Wind calls of 11 right to 5 left were noted – changing through much of that range quickly between shots. A 5 minute wind change will blow the bullet completely off target here and there were a number of ‘on aim’ misses recorded across the range.

""After much discussion of the ‘ones that got away’ over refreshments, the top 20 in the Ballinger Belt aggregate were announced by Malcolm Dodson, president of the NRA of New Zealand. Parag (6th),

David Luckman (12th) and Nigel (17th) will be representing the GB Team in tomorrow afternoon’s Ballinger Belt final. The club teams match takes place in morning with teams from the English XX and Surrey RA being chosen tonight to include most of the GB Palma Team.

After the standard routine of lunch making and ammunition pushing*, the team dispersed for dinner and more post shoot analysis.

* For non-shooters – target rifle ammunition needs to be ‘tuned’ to individual rifles. The ideal overall length of load is different for each rifle and this is achieved by loading all of the ammunition longer than is needed, each team member ‘pushing’ (compressing) it to the ideal length for their rifle before each match.
