Friday 31st July

Yesterday evening saw Zoe (our excellent physiotherapist) booked fully and doing fierce work keeping all of our less able bodied shooters moving and able to shoot. Backs and shoulders have all been put in working order at all times of day and we are all grateful to her for her assistance. In return she is learning a great deal about touring and shooting by register keeping and marking – we aren’t sure how, but she seems to be enjoying it!

The Doc Aiken match took place in much the same fashion as the previous day’s individual. The gloomy start with light behind the target favoured Calvert in the first detail and he walked away with an impressive 200.15. This was not enough to beat Waylon Burbach, who made 200.16 to secure him a place in the tie. Angus smashed in 200.12 in detail two in winds of near enough 4-6 minutes and in details three and four; the building winds were well met by Jane and Steve with 198.11 and 199.8 respectively, securing three of five places in the tie (as Sherri Gallagher matched Steve’s score). A proud showing for GB in the final shoot off and a fair chance given for some winnings come prize giving.

This afternoon saw a second round of team shooting, this time the Herrick Trophy.

The format was the same as yesterday, being two non-convertible sighters and 20 to count. Shooters and coaches were swapped around, to give everyone the chance to experience differences in style.

With rapidly changing wind of strengths up to 12 minutes, it was again going to be challenging for the coaches. Shooting fast was the order on many targets but there were the occasions when waiting out the gusts was needed. With some disappointing scores it was obvious that non of the GB (BCRC) teams were going to win but a good challenge was made. BCRC White (coached by Jeremy) was placed 9th with a score of 771.28 but were a long way off the winners USAMU Praslick, who dropped three points with 797.42. It was again abundantly clear that .308 could not compete with the Army’s 7mm in these conditions.

Moving on to the shoot off for the Doc Aiken, the wind seemed to ease but still had enough bite to make it interesting. With three GB shooters, Jane Messer, Stephen East and Angus McCloud we were well represented. Shooting fast to make the best of a steady wind, Stephen made a 98.4 and finished before the other GB shooters. Jane and Angus were slower with Jane showing how to do it by dropping 1 point, while Angus dropped a couple more. In the end Jane won with a 99.5 Stephen second with a 98.4 and Angus third. All in, a good day for GB in the prize lists.

We also welcomed Parag to Camp Perry today who arrived just in time to watch the tie shoot… Team now complete.

The team retired to our accommodation for various home cooked meals:  fajitas courtesy of Henry Day,  poached salmon and shrimp cooked by Tom Rylands  for some of the more  senior team members or chilli prepared by the Watson/Luckman culinary team.
