Barnett 2nd, Underwood 3rd in WLRC
Day 18 – WLRC Day 3
Featured Team Members
Jackie Davies
Having quite firmly stated that she had retired from team touring in 2019, Jackie has revealed that she has the breaking strain of a hot KitKat and is delighted to accept Jeremy’s invitation to work once again with the GBRT as a team Physiotherapist for the 2024 World Championships and Palma Match in South Africa. This will be Jackie’s fifth GB tour and fourth Palma tour and she is looking forward to seeing many friends from all over the world again.
Jackie still lives and works as a Physiotherapist in Alberta, having moved there in 2010. With ongoing professional development courses, she has some new skills to “inflict” on the team as well as relying on the trusted favourites! In her spare time, she enjoys an eclectic mix of clay shooting, tai chi, skiing and kayaking.
James Watson
Now on his fifth Palma (and 14th GB) team tour, this will be James’s eleventh visit to the General De Wet ranges. James earned his Big 5 badge in 2011 and captained Great Britain in the 2021 Kolapore Match. Individually, his most recent notable success was winning the Gold medal in the 800 yards aggregate at the 2019 World Championships.
James started shooting under the pupillage of Simon Pattinson at Uppingham School, before graduating to shoot at county (Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Rutland) and country level when the late Andrew Tucker selected him for his first of five England tours in 1995. His first GB cap came in 2001 and he has now amassed over 30 appearances for Great Britain.
James works for Amazon in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) business (cloud computing). At home, he is married to Ellen with two children Eddie and Zoë who keep him on his toes.
Under 25s
George Bramwell
George started shooting at the age of 14 as a pupil of Shrewsbury School, under the expert coaching of Tom Rylands. He began shooting smallbore before making the transition to fullbore, shooting the Ashburton four times, and is a proud member of the Lancashire county team. His favourite moment during his shooting career was winning the Imperial 150 team match.
Living in the Lake District, George does a fair bit of climbing, cycling and generally enjoys being outside. He is currently studying Sports and Exercise Science at Oxford Brookes University. He also competes in other variations of shooting sports most notably competing in Winter Biathlon which incorporates cross-country skiing and shooting in both prone and standing positions.
George is very much looking forward to going to the World Championships in South Africa.
Under 21s
Hayden Thomson
Hayden first began shooting in 2017 at Dollar Academy under the watchful eye of Craig Stewart and was appointed Captain in his final year. He is currently a member of the Exeter University Rifle Club and is in his second year of studying International Relations with the intention of going to Sandhurst after graduating and embarking on a career in the Army.
Having toured to Jersey and Guernsey, with the Athelings and GB U19 teams respectively, he is looking forward to touring further afield with the opportunities for varying shooting conditions and cultures that are to be experienced. A true Scot, he shot for Scotland in this year’s National Match, and West of Scotland in the Inter Counties and is pleased to be representing those north of the border. Following the tour, he hopes to continue shooting for Exeter University and help continue the team’s recent successes.
Veterans
Charles Brooks
Charles has been a regular overseas tourer, starting 50 years ago with the Athelings team to Canada (with Veterans teammate, Webbie), followed by seven official GB overseas tours.
Charles is well connected with overseas shooters at Bisley having been Secretary and Captain of the British Commonwealth Rifle Club and is now its President. This will be Charles’ second tour to South Africa after he led the GB Veterans Goodwill team to Bloemfontein last year.
Charles is married to Penny with two grown up children and one grandchild with another on the way, all of whom have had to suffer his life at Bisley! Since retiring as a partner of his law firm three years ago, Charles is now a (very) part-time consultant to the firm and keeps himself busy with a City of London Livery Company and with non-exec board roles with two long-standing charity clients.
David Young
Mostly to be seen shooting indoors at Salford and outdoors at Altcar and Huddersfield ranges, David still practices as an Architect and has designed indoor ranges including Salford 25m and Wigan 25m/50m, the latter being used for national training.
David is married to Marion whom he met at his University rifle club, and two of their four children, Bruce & Stuart, also compete. Having decided to spend much less time working, he has recently completed two GB tours to Canada. This will be his first GB Veterans excursion.
With 17 the H.M Queen’s Final badges, one the H.M. King’s Final badge and representation of England in the National & Mackinnon and Great Britain in the Commonwealth, Canada & America matches, he is looking forward to shooting in South Africa for the first time.
