Day 8 – Nova Scotia Day 3

Sunday 7th August 2022

Our final day in Nova Scotia began much the same as the previous days, with an early breakfast and a misty drive to the range, delayed slightly by an early morning birthday celebration for Saxon.

Today saw one 600m shoot held over from yesterday and therefore completing the Saturday aggregate. Nigel Ball won the match with a fantastic 50.8, but not quite enough to win the Saturday aggregate, taken by Alastair Haley with the maximum 220 points.

Two 800m matches before lunch in a gentle, but fickle wind of just around 1 minute allowed for a few points to be lost by the inattentive, but Bob Oxford took the win in one, with Canadian shooter Ian Hogg taking the other with 50.7. By lunchtime the only GB team members clean on the day were Alastair Haley and Jon Underwood, with Alastair maintaining a blemish free scorecard in the grand aggregate, ahead of Jon with just one point off.

The final of the Macdonald-Stewart was fired at 800m after lunch, and concluded the grand aggregate. We were treated to some stronger winds in the afternoon, enough to blow a few more shots off centre. Jon Underwood kept them all in the middle, snatching an 11th hour victory in the grand, ahead of Tom Rylands in 2nd, and Alastair in 3rd.

The Macdonald-Stewart itself resulted in a tie shoot between Tom and Seth Dowley, both on a perfect 110, with 16Vs each. Both put in a clean 25 points in their tie, with Seth just edging ahead with 4 V’s to Toms 3 to win the match.

After the second prizegiving, we returned to the hotel to pack up in readiness for a 1200km drive back to Quebec tomorrow.

All that remains is to thank our Nova Scotian hosts for putting on a fantastic few days shooting. Evangeline for all the hard work of organising the shoot, Laura for running stats, Dan Chisholm for arranging the squadding, Bill and Dana Giles for hosting our barbecue at their waterside house, and the whole of the NSRA for providing excellent competition and conversation on the range. It’s been a fantastic few days, and we hope to see many of you in Ottawa, Bisley, or elsewhere around the world!
