Day 17 – WLRC Day 2

Having rearranged our buses to group those on the same details, today was the first of three days where first detail shooters were back to the usual routine of 6am alarms and 6.45am leaving the hotel. Bus 2 was almost delayed with a shooter unable to tell the time having misplaced their watch, but having found it on their other wrist all was well…

Day 16 – WLRC Day 1

After the excitement of yesterday, Sunday was a slower start for most. The afternoon marked the start of the World Individual Long-range Rifle Championships. The morning gave an opportunity for a lie in, or, for those with the need, a practice session on the range to check equipment and also sight settings for 700m…

Day 15 – Under 25 and Veterans Team World Championships

Day 6 was our first day of shooting, and today was our only day without scheduled shooting until Day 23 – so a very important day to rest and recover before the World Individuals. Having had a great team meal last night, with the promise of a lie in, plans were afoot for pool time, late breakfasts, even some gym time. So, obviously, both of your beloved diarists were out of the hotel pre 9am heading to the range…

Featured Team Members

Derek Lowe
England
Cap #:
774
Big 5 Caps:
16

Derek began fullbore shooting in the cadet force at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, moving on to the Athelings in 1991, Oxford University and the Surrey county team through the 1990s. He has been fortunate enough to represent England or Great Britain in various guises in Australia, Canada, Jersey, Kenya, Namibia, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

This tour will be Derek’s sixth to South Africa, and fourth as Adjutant. Keenest at long range and in a team environment, he also spends a lot of time in Match Rifle. Aside from coaching and shooting (usually in that order), Derek sits on various committees in order to delay the inevitable moments when he has to leave Bisley. He is an experienced charity trustee both in shooting circles and at the church he attends in central London, and works in corporate management for a shuttle tanker fleet.

Rosanne Furniss
SM
England
Cap #:
923
Big 5 Caps:
6

Rosanne started shooting fullbore at university, spending the next 10 years focusing on honing her wind reading skills in Match Rifle before restarting Target Rifle for the 150th Anniversary Meeting in 2019.

Rosanne has subsequently shot for England in the National and Mackinnon, and for GB in the Kolapore and Protea matches. The 2023 tour to South Africa was her first Target Rifle tour, and it reinforced her passion for meeting shooters from across the world and celebrating the opportunities the sport can give. As a result, she is very much looking forward to returning to South Africa and competing in Bloemfontein at her first World Championships.

Aside from shooting, Rosanne enjoys her work in consulting, project managing large scale transformation projects and spending time with her family in Lewes.

Under 25s

Alice Good
GM
England
Cap #:
n/a
Big 5 Caps:
2

Alice started shooting at the University of Cambridge where she soon found form in the Varsity matches against Oxford, helping her team to a steady stream of victories. Following steady improvement year after year and not a little frustration at narrowly missing out on top-scoring some of the team matches she was selected for, including being 3 vee-bulls short of top scoring for England in her first National, Alice won the H.M. Queen’s Prize in 2022, becoming only the third ever woman to do so.

Away from Bisley, Alice has just graduated as a veterinary surgeon, and enjoys horse riding when she finds the time. She is looking forward to her first tour and experiencing shooting a target rifle at a range other than Bisley. Rumour has it she’s also the team doctor so, in combination with the human doctor on the team, she trust all medical risks will be covered.

Under 21s

Oscar Farrell
Wales
Cap #:
n/a
Big 5 Caps:
6

Oscar began shooting at Wellington College at the age of 13, under the tuition of Nigel Ball. He toured Jersey as a cadet in 2018, returning in 2022 as a member of the undefeated NRA team. In 2019, he toured Canada with the Athelings and secured his first National cap for Wales, continuing to shoot in the National Match every year since. In 2021, Oscar was awarded his first Mackinnon cap for Wales.

Oscar is now a regular member of the Yorkshire county team. This is helping to fuel his commitment to continually develop his shooting skills and he looks forward to the challenge that South Africa will bring.

Oscar is also a Sound Engineer and Musician, and has taken a year out of studying for his degree in York to complete a prestigious placement with an award-winning record label, recording some of the finest orchestras and musicians across London and the UK.

Veterans

Charles Brooks
England
Cap #:
607
Big 5 Caps:
11

Charles has been a regular overseas tourer, starting 50 years ago with the Athelings team to Canada (with Veterans teammate, Webbie), followed by seven official GB overseas tours.

Charles is well connected with overseas shooters at Bisley having been Secretary and Captain of the British Commonwealth Rifle Club and is now its President. This will be Charles’ second tour to South Africa after he led the GB Veterans Goodwill team to Bloemfontein last year.

Charles is married to Penny with two grown up children and one grandchild with another on the way, all of whom have had to suffer his life at Bisley! Since retiring as a partner of his law firm three years ago, Charles is now a (very) part-time consultant to the firm and keeps himself busy with a City of London Livery Company and with non-exec board roles with two long-standing charity clients.

David Young
England
Cap #:
920
Big 5 Caps:
4

Mostly to be seen shooting indoors at Salford and outdoors at Altcar and Huddersfield ranges, David still practices as an Architect and has designed indoor ranges including Salford 25m and Wigan 25m/50m, the latter being used for national training.

David is married to Marion whom he met at his University rifle club, and two of their four children, Bruce & Stuart, also compete. Having decided to spend much less time working, he has recently completed two GB tours to Canada. This will be his first GB Veterans excursion.

With 17 the H.M Queen’s Final badges, one the H.M. King’s Final badge and representation of England in the National & Mackinnon and Great Britain in the Commonwealth, Canada & America matches, he is looking forward to shooting in South Africa for the first time.

Tour Information

Captain’s Foreword

My family has a long tradition of fullbore rifle shooting with substantial links to South Africa. My Grandfather Major Tom Anstey, captained the 1953 GB Team to South Africa whilst my father, Major David Scott-Langley, was Adjutant to the 1963 GB Team. In 1993 I made my first trip to South Africa as a member of that year’s Great Britain Rifle Team…
