Day 17

Miles Horton-Baker

Today marked the first full day of the World Championships. With temperatures reading up to 39 degrees, and three shoots involving 2 sighters and 15 counting shots, today was a true test of shooting in the toughest conditions.

700m began early in the morning with a tricky, but readable wind from the left hand side of the range. Top scores here were Toby, Christina and Alice who all managed 75/75.

We then moved onto 800m where it became apparent that the conditions were only going to get trickier. Henry, having only dropped 1 point so far, put in a very respectable score of 74.6, the best in the team and only leaving him 2 off for the championships so far.

Then came 900m. As is often the case at this range, 900m is the final distance shot towards late afternoon, where the wind has the potential to be at its strongest, and today was no exception. With square wind coming from the right, firers had to adjust their sights to compensate for this, some using up to 9 minutes of wind, equating to approximately 15-18mph gusts. Scores were considerably lower therefore and Jemima scored the best in our team with a 69.5. Some of our GB counterparts won the range with 73/75, an immense achievement in those conditions.

We tidied ourselves up and then headed out to the steak restaurant, New York, for a joint dinner with the South African and Australian U25 team.
